This work reveals a conservative, neo-Brahmsian imagination, with an avid interest in folk music, including spirituals, which Mr. Collins renders in dignified transcriptions. The opening set of variations is the best work. It’s sweetly lyrical, in fine Irish folk tradition. Earl Wild, it should go without saying, performs with his usual panache and ringing tone.
